Big Bang World Record - Join Free Join Now and Benefit

Let’s face it; one of the main goals of joining a meme is to increase links.
So, let’s call a spade a spade and see how “Big” of a “Bang” we can get.

The goal is to exceed 1,000 sites. Can it be done? With your help we will leave all the other memes in our dust!

Just follow the instructions. No thought necessary.

*Start Copy Here*

You do not have to be tagged to play along. This game is simple and so are the rules.

  1. Copy from *Start Copy Here* through *End Copy Here*
  2. Add your site(s) to the list. Just be sure to post at each site you add.
  3. Tag or don’t tag, your choice, however, the more tags you create the bigger the list will grow.
  4. Let me know your blog’s name and url by leaving me a comment HERE. I will add you to the master list. (If you would like the scroll box code, leave me your email address and I will email it to you.)
  5. Come back and copy the master list back to your site, often. This process will allow late-comers to get as much link benefit as the first ones in.

Viral linking

I got tagged, this time by Adrienne, whose blog 9 Months to birthing my BESTSELLER! is about her book Notes From the Mothership The Naked Invisibles.

This sounds very interesting and somehow appeals to my desire for organized things. So here it goes:

Part one, supply links:

Copy all the links below (make sure it's alphabetized) and replace a single link under the appropriate alphabet. If your domain name, or even the title of your blog, starts with an " A," you'd replace the link under that alphabet and put the replaced link at the bottom. Also, don't forget to credit the tagger, or where you got the list from, at the end of the list with a full URL of the post so that a pingback gets generated.

Two questions for the tagged:
What is your marker of success...right now?
What would be your marker of success a month from now?

I will answer the question for me.
My marker of success is hitting the front page in Digg 6 times in the last month.
My marker of success a month from now would be writing an article about mathematics which would reach the front page.

I got the long list of tags from:

Amazing mathematics - Möbius Strip

This time I give you an example of topology. Intuitively, two spaces are topologically equivalent if one can be deformed into the other without cutting or gluing. A traditional joke is that a topologist can't tell the coffee mug out of which she is drinking from the doughnut she is eating, since a sufficiently pliable doughnut could be reshaped to the form of a coffee cup by creating a dimple and progressively enlarging it, while shrinking the hole into a handle.
The Möbius strip or Möbius band is a surface with only one side and only one boundary component. It has the mathematical property of being non-orientable.
Here are some examples of the amazing properties this surface holds. You can easily try the experiments yourself.

Fantastic mail again!

I had been waiting for this mail and yesterday it finally came. I had heard from a Canadian friend that he was able to buy it in a local store, but to me that will be impossible.

The newest book with Conceptis puzzles is fascinating. In general mazes are easy to solve, but this is 25-foot long! The puzzle is folded in a hard cover.

When you open it, you can see what can be read on the back cover: To get the whole puzzle, you need to complete the whole puzzle.

25 feet means 48 pages :) The solution is in the back and here is a little peak:

If I seem to be missing for a few days, you can imagine what I am up to!

Member 150 in MyBlogLog Community

About a week ago the Conceptisaddict community in MyBlogLog got its 150th member, Machine-Human. I had already decided that I will blog about it and to my great satisfaction the blog was very suitable for me to write about. The sites name is Machine-Human
- happy droids, sad robots and functional zombies and the description is

Machine-Human is a collection of links to websites about Technology, Human-Machine Interaction, Philosophy of Mind, Philosophy of Information, Creativity, Innovation, Artificial Intelligence, Meta-Perception, Physics, Mathematics, Science Fiction and a few cutting-edge news.

The list of this year's posts:

Beauty and truth in physics

Simplifying complex networks: from a clustering to a coarse graining strategy

Culture influences brain function

Mind reading is advancing

Iona

Math is beautiful

EPK_Cheoptics360_XL

My personal favourite is of course Math is beautiful. It provides a link to Benoit Mandelbrot Fractal Art Contest winners 2007. The images are really beautiful. I spent a long time trying to decide which is best and finally I chose this:

Bubbling Growth

Jussi Härkönen

The truth is that they were all so beautiful… Here the name of the artist was the final value :) It is clearly Finnish.

The first entry on the site is from 6th of November 2007. The links are absolutely great and each link has a description of the content and also a picture. I recommend to check the site. I spent a lot of time there and also will in the future.

Viral linking with a difference

I was tagged to this by Rampantheart

It's a known fact that Viral linking has a lot of benefits. Those who don't know about viral linking, click here. What we are going to do now is follow the same thing, but with a difference. Usually, we post just people's links as such. But the rules are a bit different.

All you have to do is post links to 5 of your most favorite blog posts and tag 5 bloggers to do the same. This way , your favorite blog posts will seek the limelight and you get excellent results. This is not a very difficult job. Have a great time tagging and see your blog's traffic increasing!

Now comes the tagging part.

I tag Liudmila, André, RennyBA, Jenny and Gil

My most favorite posts are:

I am glad Microsoft does not make cars

Polar Bears in Finland?!

Santa lives in Finland

Tampere University of Technology students play Tetris WITH their dorm

"Mathemagics": Arthur Benjamin on TED.com

In a lively performance, "mathemagician" Arthur Benjamin races a team of calculators to figure out 3-digit squares in his head, performs a massive mental calculation, and guesses a few birth days. How does he do it? He'll be happy to tell you. (Recorded February 2005 in Monterey, California. Duration: 15:14.)

Now you all probably think that I have finally gone insane. The above is a Haiku poem I generated with Haiku-a-Tron from Language is a Virus webpage. Also the title is from there.

So if you one day suffer from the writer's block, just generate your text with the help of the site. There are poem generators and all kinds of suggestions to write a story. Fun!

Funny Quizzes

I did two Quizzes in Blogthings

Your Aura is Blue

Spiritual and calm, you tend to live a quiet but enriching life.
You are very giving of yourself. And it's hard for you to let go of relationships.

The purpose of your life: showing love to other people

Famous blues include: Angelina Jolie, the Dali Lama, Oprah

Careers for you to try: Psychic, Peace Corps Volunteer, Counselor

I think that was pretty much what to be expected. So was the second :) I was not surprised because the questions involved puzzles and things I do when I use mathematics!
You Are a Total Brainiac

You're amazingly brilliant. Some would even say genius.
You're curious, thoughtful, analytical, and confident.

You take on difficult subjects because you want to... not because you have to.
No field of knowledge is too complicated or intimidating for you.

You've got the brains to do anything you want.
It's possible you end up doing everything you want.

There were many more interesting ones, but I was afraid to answer quizzes like:
Are You Sexy? , What Kind of First Impression Do You Make? or Are You A Weirdo?
In the last one I would definitely have gained the hichest score there is :)

Thinking Blogger Award

This is my 100th post! I would never have imagined this would happen so soon, if ever, when I started in August. I have had so much fun doing all this and gained so many friends and I have also grown an interest to things I did not care about before or didn’t know even existed.

It is quite a coincidence that at the same time sweet Hanna from Amori, poesie, arte, chat virtuali by Hanna rewarded me with the Thinking Blogger Award. Thank you so much Hanna; this makes me feel that my blog really matters. I am very honoured.

I started to check backwards how many people there was between me and the first awards. I soon got into trouble finding links, partly because the award has been travelling Italy lately and I can't speak Italian. When I finally read the original post from The Thinking Blog I realized that it has been travelling almost a year. The post had been written in the 11th of February in 2007!

At some point I have to try to create the whole chain. This is one odd part of me: digging the past. I have done quite a bit of family search and this reminds me of that adventure finding older generations.

And now to the award:

The participation rules are simple:

1. If, and only if, you get tagged, write a post with links to 5 blogs that make you think,
2. Link to this post so that people can easily find the exact origin of the meme,
3. Optional: Proudly display the 'Thinking Blogger Award' with a link to the post that you wrote (here is an alternative
silver version if gold doesn't fit your blog).

In addition there is a note: “
Please, remember to tag blogs with real merits, i.e. relative content, and above all - blogs that really get you thinking! “

I take notes like that very seriously and that is why I am tagging:

Gil, who got me to start this blog. My blog is more like having fun with serious issues and I feel so small when I read what Gil has written. His variety of the content is amazing and so is his knowledge about movies.

Tomi Ahonen, who convinced me that blogging will be the next popular way to communicate (following e-mails and text messages). Tomi is originally Finnish but currently in Hong Kong and he is an expert in 3G blogging and lecturing about it.

Meghna, who is 12 years old and living in India. Her stories are unbelievable, creative and enjoyable to read. Every time I read her stories I start to think about people: why many adults behave like children compared to this talented girl.

Mokki, whose blog compares Portugal and Finland. He has shown me a new side of my own country not only in his blog but all the other social platforms where we have friendied each other.

Rash Kath, whose passion in mathematics blogging has made me convinced that I’ll start a real mathematical blog to my students. My current Finnish blog concentrates on the entertaining and beautiful side of math, like this one. Rash Kath also created a group named Passionate Teachers and the amount of knowledge shared there is even too much for me to swallow instantly. Now I know what I will be doing next summer on my vacation.

Unlike before the award did not stay in Finland, but left to various places: Portugal, India, Hong Kong and Israel.

I am glad Microsoft does not make cars...

What is going on with Microsoft Office Excel? I found an article submitted to Digg which was written based on the article Major bug found in Microsoft Excel 2007 in ComNetSlash.com from 25 of September 2007.

That article gave as a source Major bug in MS Excel 2007 in ZDNet.co.uk, where the issue was handled more thoroughly.

The problem was that the calculation 850*77.1 in Excel showed the answer to be 100000. The right answer is 65535.

As a mathematics teacher I got interested and had to give it a try; maybe just not believing my eyes. The articles were right. One suggested that a shell should have SUM(850*77.1) which I find totally unnecessary. I tried using the function giving the product but since I have the Finnish version it looks like TULO(850:77.1). Well, not exactly, we use a decimal comma, not a decimal point. The answer is 100000. I get the same answer if I use the normal “=850*77.1” or if I place the numbers in shells and multiply their content.

However, the number is just rounded up. If I continue and subtract the right answer, as if I was calculating 100000 – 65535, I get 0. The answer is right which means that the content of the shell showing 100 000 is 65535 but Excel hides it from me. With any other numbers in the neighbourhood this does not happen and the calculation 85*77.1 gives me the right answer.

My first impression was that my settings are wrong. I tried to give a more exact answer by taking decimals to the display with the result 100000.000! Even the scientific display failed, now the answer was 1,00E+05. The disturbing thing is that while it was in the form of an integer, one could always claim that it is rounded, but now it shows 3 significant numbers!

The bug was reported at the time and Microsoft Excel blog answers:

our testing showed that this really didn't have anything do to with multiplication - it manifested itself with many but not all calculations in Excel that should have resulted in 65,535 (=65535*1 and =16383.75*4 worked for instance). Further testing showed a similar phenomenon with 65,536 as well.

In 9th of October the same blog finally informs that the update is available:

Calculation Issue Update (Fix Available)

Two weeks ago, we posted about an issue involving the calculation of numbers around 65,535 and 65,536. As of today, fixes for this issue in Excel 2007 and Excel Services 2007 are available for download from the following locations:

Excel 2007: http://download.microsoft.com/download/6/1/3/61343075-aa12-4152-a761-fccc16d6cef4/office-kb943075-fullfile-x86-glb.exe
64-bit Excel Services 2007:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/c/d/c/cdcccd84-86cd-4199-b01c-1df2dac66534/office-kb943076-fullfile-x64-glb.exe
32-bit Excel Services 2007:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/c/d/c/cdcccd84-86cd-4199-b01c-1df2dac66534/office-kb943076-fullfile-x86-glb.exe

KB Articles have been posted as well:

Excel 2007: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/943075/
Excel Services 2007:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/943076

We are in the process of adding this fix to Microsoft Update so that it will get automatically pushed to users running Excel 2007 or Excel Services 2007. Additionally, the fix will also be contained in the first service pack of Office 2007 when it is released (the release date for SP1 of Office 2007 has not been finalized).

Thank you for your patience,

The Excel Team

I bought my laptop one week before Christmas and the Office a couple of days later. I have an Enterprise version licensed for use only by students and faculty. The fix was not automatically pushed to me.

I guess now I have to start downloading… I have not checked yet, if SP1 for Office 2007 is available.

History of Mathematics

I found this video about the history of mathematics in YouTube. I have never been very enthusiastic about history and reading about even history of mathematics is a bit boring. It is funny how seeing the events, even animated, makes history so much more interesting.

Memories

I happened to hear this song yesterday and it triggered some very old memories; not even real memories but a certain mood I had long ago forgotten.

"Riders on the Storm" is a popular 1971 song by The Doors from the L.A. Woman album, reaching number 14 on the charts. The song was inspired by the song "Riders in the Sky: A Cowboy Legend". It incorporates thunder and rain sound effects and Ray Manzarek's Fender Rhodes electric piano playing which emulates the sound of rain. It is played in E Dorian mode (almost identical to the E Minor scale).

New Year's Resolutions

I have been tagged again, this time by Hanna. It goes like this:

*Start Copy Here*
When it comes to New Year’s Resolutions we seem to fall into four categories:
1) quite serious about them,
2) be flippant about them,
3) do it because we feel pressured to, or
4) do not do them.
So, the purpose of this little game is to let us know which category you are in. Copy from “*Start Copy Here*” through “*End Copy Here*” and post it. Before “*End Copy Here*” tell us who you are, your site(s) (with link) and your New Year’s Resolution, or not.
Then tag as many others as you like, from one to your entire blogroll, your choice.
If you like, create an intro paragraph to your post that also acknowledges who tagged you.

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS:
Juliana –
Juliana’s Site My New Year’s resolutions are looking for a part time job, keep blogging, and learn to cook and bake.
Michelle -
Rusin Roundup1. Learn to be happier and accept myself for who I am, 2. Is to lose about 25 lbs., and 3. Is to stop smoking.
Karen -
Grow Rich Along With Me My resolution for next year is to achieve $3K per month passive income by the end of 2008.
Mel -
Attitude, the Ultimate Power ;“I don’t need no stinking resolutions.” I never hold to them anyway so why frustrate myself by starting them now.
Sandee -
Comedy Plus I don’t need no stinking resolutions either. Years and years ago I did them because everyone else did, but not once did I follow through. Why set yourself up for failure?
Lynda -
lynda’s loft My resolution is to see resolve to that which needs resolution. Like Mel and Sandee, I feel that resolutions give us more stress, however, being a person who sets goals each year, isn’t that the same thing as a resolution??? Goals vs. resolutions? Goals are more general and allow for more time to complete them, a resolution requires a mind-set and immediate action, which is not always feasible… Well, that’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it…
Amelia -
Amel’s Realm This is a list of my New Year’s Resolution:
1. Health: Continue exercising twice a week, eat enough veggies and fruit, have enough rest, take vitamin C regularly and women’s multivitamin during my period.
2. Spiritual: Improve my Daily Bread reading routine and my prayer life and learn more from God’s Word.
3. Financial: Continue to make money online (my goal is getting €100 per month at least), be more creative in writing posts, and save most of the money...
Max -
MAXMy New Year’s resolutions are to dedicate more time to my friends; to finally be able to read “Der Spiegel” in German; to be calm when organizing my marriage; to go one last time to my favourite club and dance the night away; and continue to be happy!
Eric -
Speedcat Hollydale - I love chicken. Problem is that I really never get to have enough chicken! My New Year’s resolution is to enact “Chicken Tuesday”. On this day I will eat only chicken, blog about chicken, and promote chickens all over the world. (hormone free) Join me, won’t you?
Marzie -
Mariuca ;- My resolution for 2008 is to enjoy a healthier lifestyle and to expand my Perfume Collection.
Sindi-
Life Is A Roller Coaster - My resolution is to complain less, pray more and be a little more thankful for what I have.
Judy -
Sugar Queen’s Dream First Time Dad - My New Year’s Resolution for 2008 is to be a better father…now I don’t usually make New Year’s resolutions because I never keep them but this one I better keep! Happy New Year to one and all!
Colin -
Life - New Years Resolution? No way…Better to achieve more throughout the year rather than pander to the whims of a one day ‘wishful thought’
Mauro -
1 Million Love Messages - My resolution for next year are: 1. Change my job (maybe work online). I’m really unhappy in the actual one. 2. Dedicate more time to my family and girlfriend… 3. Work hard in 1 Million Love Messages and reach 2500 Love messages (or more) in the end of 2008.
MidgetManOfSteel -
Mental Poo - To get out of dealing with people who I have no desire in helping at the job I’m doing…catch the eye of someone who can see that I can write and be funny…and get my own ticket to happiness from my humor….and a Ferrari. While I’m doing this, I resolve to get a Ferrari.
Stacy -
My Thoughts My New Year’s Resolution for 2008 - Is to be more understanding to my children and to other people, Not to curse at others while I am driving, try to eat right and exercise, try to volunteer in my community, and to believe more in my spiritual side.
Jason -
DatCurious.comDatMoney.comAlthough, I normally don’t do New Year’s Resolutions (because I find it as an excuse to actually do something I should’ve already been doing), this year I will plan on giving back to the blogging community, especially my audience. I’m not sure how I will do it yet, but I definitely will.
Kesa -
Little Aussie Cynic My New Years Resolution is the standard….. to finally get off the smokes and to loose 8kg…. both which are possible just difficult…..Happy New Year to you and yours….Aussie
